Olivia Munn reveals mother’s breast cancer battle after undergoing same ‘life-saving’ test that led to her diagnosis

Actress Olivia Munn has revealed her mother has been diagnosed with breast cancer, a year after she announced she was battling the disease.

Munn, who describes herself as a breast cancer survivor after undergoing lifesaving treatment, took to Instagram overnight to reveal her mother’s diagnosis came after she took the same lifetime risk assessment test that helped detect her own cancer in 2023.

Munn did not reveal exactly when her mother Kim was diagnosed with the disease, but revealed she had now undergone treatment, including a double mastectomy and chemotherapy.

Munn has urged women to be proactive about their breast health since being diagnosed with the disease, which only came about after her doctor carried out the same lifetime risk assessment test despite having had a clear mammogram.

That test indicated Munn had a higher risk of developing breast cancer in her lifetime, and resulted in a breast MRI that detected the disease.

Munn was diagnosed with luminal B cancer in both breasts in 2023 and underwent a double mastectomy.

She only revealed her diagnosis in March 2024 and has since undergone more treatment, including a partial hysterectomy, as part of her fight against the disease.

Now Munn has revealed that she urged her mother to have the same test as her, which showed she also had a higher chance of getting the disease.

“Her yearly mammogram had just come out clear but because of that high score, I insisted she get an MRI,” Munn explained in a series of slides she shared to Instagram.

“Shortly after that MRI, my mother was diagnosed with Stage 1 Her2 breast cancer.

“She has since completed 12 rounds of chemo and will continue monthly Herceptin transfusions until this fall (Spring here).”

Munn said having her mother support her through her double mastectomy and now having supported her mother through her own treatment, she could say “cancer is really hard”.

“But there’s something about watching a loved one go through it that is even more heartbreaking,” she wrote.

“I spent many nights taking care of my mum when the chemo became too much, wishing I could fight the fight for her.”

Munn also urged her followers to consider having the same risk assessment test that she credited with saving her and her mother’s lives.

“My mum wanted me to tell you that she hopes by sharing her story it will help save someone’s life.”

Munn said her mother had been very brave throughout the ordeal, even attempting to do laundry and cook dinner just days after undergoing a double mastectomy.

She shared a video of her mother in the kitchen, and photos of her with her husband Sam, and with Munn’s husband John Mulaney, who supported Munn through her breast cancer battle.

The two met in 2021 and married on July 4, 2024.

They share two children, son Malcolm, who was born in November 2021, and a daughter named Méi, who was carried by a surrogate and arrived in September 2024.
