Jake Reiner has detailed the trauma of discovering his filmmaker parents had allegedly been murdered, and his own brother was accused of killing them.
The 34-year-old actor described receiving the call from his sister with news that renowned When Harry Met Sally director Rob Reiner and his wife, producer Michele Singer Reiner, had died.
“My world, as I knew it, had collapsed,” he wrote in a Substack post, adding that what the family faced was a “living nightmare.”

Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, were found dead in their Los Angeles home in December 2025.
Their youngest son, Nick, has pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder after allegedly stabbing his parents to death.
The 32-year-old has had drug addiction and mental health challenges and remains in custody ahead of his next court appearance.

Jake, the eldest of the three children, described the scale of the loss in the essay, saying the circumstances made it harder to process.
“We lost more than half of our family that night in the most violent way imaginable,” he wrote.

“Sure, any loss of a parent is devastating, but nothing compares to losing both of them at the same time and, on top of that, having your brother be at the centre of it. It’s almost too impossible to process.”
He said he understands there is public interest in the case, but indicated some details will remain private.
“I understand that people have questions about what happened. Some of those answers will come in time. But some parts of this belong only to our family, and keeping them private is the only way to protect what little remains of something that was taken from us,” he said.
The couple were found dead at their Brentwood home on December 14 by their daughter, Romy.
Prosecutors allege Nick Reiner fatally stabbed both parents in a bedroom before leaving.

Jake said he often thinks about his parents’ final moments.
“They were the last people in the world to deserve what happened to them,” he wrote.
“They deserved to be loved, they deserved to be respected, and above all, they deserved to be appreciated for how much they gave to all three of us and to the world.”
He revealed his sister will share her account “in her own way and in her time”.

The post also reflects on their formidable legacies.
Rob Reiner was behind classics like When Harry Met Sally, while Michele was a powerhouse in her own right – a renowned photographer, producer, and co-president of Castle Rock Entertainment.
Jake said writing the essay was a way to acknowledge both the loss and his parents’ lives.
“Every meeting we take, every person we talk to, every tear we shed, every movement we make is connected to our parents being murdered,” he wrote.
“Every day has been horrendous.”
