‘Be really careful’: Jackie O reveals how her painkiller addiction first started

On Thursday morning Jackie O Henderson revealed the truth behind her painkiller addiction.

Back in November, the radio host revealed she had privately battled with a drug addiction, admitting that she “was in a really, really dark place”.

Now, Henderson has shared how it all started.

Drug and alcohol experts have praised radio star Jackie 'O' Henderson for her decision to open up about her private battle with a drug addiction live on air this morning. The KIIS FM host was in tears as she made a vulnerable statement about her use of pain killers, sleeping pills and alcohol in a three-year addiction battle that ended with a month-long stay in a rehabilitation centre in November 2022.

“I got addicted because I got prescribed Endone [an oxycodone]. That’s why,” she told co-host Kyle Sandilands and guest Dr Dam Hay during The Kyle & Jackie O Show.

The conversation came about during the show’s regular Dr KIIS segment after she asked Dr Hay what the “strongest” painkiller he would subscribe is.

After sharing that she was prescribed Endone, Sandilands was shocked asking if she had “conned” doctors into it.

“That was different… that’s a dodgy thing,” she said.

“But originally, I was prescribed for a true pain that I was experiencing because I was going to the hospital every month with my endometriosis.

“It just got so out of control, I had to go to the hospital to get morphine. And then so they prescribed the Endone as a way to manage it.”

Henderson said that the doctors had warned her about how addictive the painkiller can be, adding that at first she had thought, “I’ll be fine”.

“It is dangerous,” she explained.

“When they handed me the drug they said, it’s so addictive. Be really careful. And it really, really is.

“I took those pills and thought, I’ll be fine. And I realised you’re not fine because they are so addictive.”

Back in October the radio star had shared that she had been taking painkillers, sleeping pills and alcohol in a three-year addiction battle that ended with a month-long stay in a rehabilitation centre in November 2022.

She shared that only a handful of people knew and that even Sandilands had been kept in the dark.

”Where do you draw the line?” Henderson said of her decision to keep her health battle private.

“I just didn’t want anyone to know until I had at least gotten a year or more of sobriety under my belt.”
