‘Woke up in a pool of blood’: Darren Hayes shares near-death experience

Aussie singer Darren Hayes has revealed a shocking list of health issues after a family tragedy, as well as a light at the end of the tunnel.

The Savage Garden singer took to his Instagram account to share photos of his face and an X-ray with a lengthy caption explaining why he will shortly be away from the spotlight.

The star shared that in March, two months after his mother passed away, he had a “terrible accident” that saw him lose consciousness and fall three times after getting out of bed.

“The blunt force trauma was so severe it snapped my left jawbone in half. I woke up in a pool of blood, terrible pain in my left side of my head and with 9 teeth shattered,” he shared.

The 52-year-old felt “so lucky” that he was found, being taken to Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California, adding that “I could have died if I landed in a different position.”

Surgeons inserted a titanium brace into the singer’s mouth to reconnect his jaw bones, with his jaw being wired shut as he recovers.

It has now been a month since his surgery, and in the meantime he has been working with a cardiologist and oral surgeon to find the cause of these fainting spells, sharing that his heart, arteries and brain are healthy so far.

After his jaw heals he still has to go through rehab to regain jaw function and also replace his shattered teeth.

“I just wanted my fans to know why I’ll be out of action for quite some time,” he said.

“I love you folks. I’m so grateful to be alive and every day I’m getting stronger.

“I’m so grateful to my loved ones for coming to my rescue and to the doctors and nurses who have treated me with such care.

“After surviving a brutal divorce, losing my Mother, finding out my father died and then this I have had moments of deep sadness. But I am a survivor and I’ll come back strong.”

Hours later he shared another life update, this one uplifting.

“It’s not all bad news,” he shared before revealing, “The kindest, most generous and loving man came in to my life almost two years ago, like a miracle.”

The Insatiable singer shared the news alongside an AI-enhanced photo of the pair as Muppets.

”While I want to protect our private universe for as long as we can here’s a hilarious Muppet picture of us. Thank you Heriberto for loving me and taking such care of me during some of the most challenging times in my life. I loved you the first time ever I saw your face.”

The health scare comes just months after his beloved mother Judy passed away in January this year, and his divorce to husband Richard Cullen was finalised in late 2024 after 17 years of marriage.
